The ineffable seduction of ham
"Gypsy violins have had their day," - so an alleged tombeur de femmes told me, - "today it is more seductive to know how to cut ham with a knife!" At the moment I snubbed him, but then I said why not? So here I am on my way to Maniago, the city of knives, already thinking of San Daniele del Friuli, home of the inimitable prosciutto col piedino. Preparatory stop, the Museo dell'Arte Fabbrile e delle Coltellerie.
Then, while I'm at it, cultural interlude in the Duomo to admire a vaunted Triptych. Then to the workshop for an impeccable ham knife, long blade, round tip and the elegance of the horn handle. Finally, across the Tagliamento, to the prosciutteria. Now tool (the ham) and bow (the knife) I have them. I doubt I have the hand of a Paganini, but at the first opportunity I will tell you....
