Ragogna Lake
A natural palette with millennia of history behind it
Where is
What it is and where it is
A not-very-large, elliptical-shaped lake is set in a landscape of staggering beauty, made even more spectacular by sunset, when the sun dyes the surrounding mountain range red. This is Ragogna Lake, embraced by soft, fertile marshy soils, visited by many migratory birds that find food and rest here, and a keeper of evidence of the history of these places.
Why it is special
We are in the presence of a basin of glacial origin, thus with much history behind it: almost 12 thousand years! Here then that archaeological studies have unearthed traces of prehistory, that not far away are the tombstones of a Jewish cemetery dating back to at least the 18th century, and that in the vicinity can be seen the mouths of the quarries that remained in operation until the 1950s. A true compendium of history in a very rich natural setting.
Not to be missed
When the sunset lays its colors on the lake and its surroundings, the landscape becomes truly fabulous, but it is not the only painter at work here in Lake Ragogna: many water lilies grow on the water, and when the blooming time comes, their soft, velvety colors are reflected on the waters, aware of their beauty.
Trivia
Ragogna Lake is one of the few in Italy to boast the presence of the water chestnut, an aquatic plant that produces a fruit that, like the more common chestnuts, is protected by a woody shell. Since ancient times it was harvested and dried in order to grind it into a flour.
