What it is and where it is
The complex of the Hospitale di San Giovanni a Gerusalemme appears like a gem in the small village of San Tomaso-Comerzo, a hamlet of Majano. What distinguishes it from any other building is its medieval essentiality: the simple forms, cool stones, and timid traces of frescoes on the outside of the small church make it incredibly fascinating. Combine this with the special name of the complex, and the connection of this place with the epic cycle of the Holy Land is immediate.
Why it is special
It was precisely from here that the path passed that led from Europe to the Adriatic ports on its way to Jerusalem: it continued under St. Daniel, along the original route of the "Romea Strata" but, also that of the "Alemagna Road." The Hospitale complex served to welcome wayfarers and give them refreshment. We also arrive there as pilgrims in transit, welcomed by the shade of the cloister within the walls of the complex, now restored to meet needs similar to the original asylum offering.
Curiosity
Every night, at 10 p.m., the bell of the little church of St. Daniel rings. It is not used to mark the time, but to keep alive a memory: that of dark medieval nights, when the sound of the bell was the only signal that could help wayfarers get their bearings and reach safe shelter.
