SHARRYLAND
Where is
What it is and where it is
Houses opening their doors onto the beach, alleys leading down to the sea, charming little squares, and a clear, inviting sea. Especially when you look at it from afar, Varigotti seems like a quiet Mediterranean village, almost slumbering in the soothing song of the waves. In short, it is the ideal place to enjoy beautiful beaches at any time of day, so much so that it only takes a few steps to be ready to lie in the sun... Yet in the distance you can see the sea ploughed by swimmers and small boats: in the water, exciting adventures await!
Why it is special
However, Varigotti is by no means a sleepy village: just look just beyond the beach, where rocks rise in a promontory that hides a picturesque bay from view. Hidden nooks and crannies, high promontories-no wonder that Saracen pirates anciently landed right here wreaking havoc. An adventurous past that still shines through in the thrill of adventure given by the many activities available: snorkeling, whale watching,, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, trekking on the more or less gentle paths overlooking the sea, mountain biking and climbing.
Not to be missed
It is precisely the oldest elements that preserve the true spirit of the village. So a visit through the alleys of the old village is a must, and then leave the built-up area behind and reach the promontory of Punta Crena, guardian of ancient beauties suspended between the sea and the mountain, such as the Tower of Varigotti, rebuilt in 1800, once a lookout of the promontory and the entire village, or the old Church of San Lorenzo, a trace of an important medieval past.
A bit of history
Romans, Byzantines, Lombards, Saracens, and Genoese succeeded each other over the centuries, leaving important traces and shaping a unique cultural landscape. For a long time Varigotti belonged to the domain of the Del Carrettos of Finale, in constant struggle with the Republic of Genoa. Under Napoleonic rule Varigotti came under the influence of the Ligurian Republic, but retained its status as an autonomous municipality. In 1869, not without resistance, it was united with Pia and Calvisio, and then in 1927 with Marina and Finalborgo, to form the present municipality of Finale Ligure.
Curiosities
On the cliff of Cape Noli stands a very special rock known as the "Lion of Malpasso." Legend has it that a sailor in Morocco captured one and brought it to the plateau of Le Manie, just above the Cape. But the lion, sad at losing his mate and his land, kept roaring with melancholy. One night he escaped and went down to the cliff. From there he heard the call of his mate and roared back to her. But a magician, disturbed by the wailing, turned him into stone. Even today it is said that on windy days it is possible to hear the roars of the lioness, who from the coasts of Africa searches for her beloved and calls to him in vain.
