A trip to the islands of Lake Bolsena
Experience Lake Bolsena from a new perspective: by boat to visit Isola Bisentina
Where is

Where is Lake Bolsena and what are its islands
A great protagonist of Tuscia Viterbese, Lake Bolsena is Italy's fifth largest lake. It is located in Lazio, in the province of Viterbo, but very close to the borders with Umbria and Tuscany. Its beauty and the villages along its shores make it very famous, but there is one visit that is often overlooked, and that is a pity, because it gives excitement and spectacular views. In fact, there are as many as two islands to be discovered during excursions on the lake. The smaller one,
How to get to Bisentina Island
Visiting Isola Bisentina means embarking (literally), on a beautiful excursion on Lake Bolsena. Ferries from Bolsena and Capodimonte make it easy to get to the island, which is not far away. Although the navigation is all in all short, it gives emotions that remain in your heart: the fragrant air, the sun caressing you and the view of the receding shore. It is here that you realize that you are now part of that magnificent landscape that until recently you admired from the shore, as if by magic you were entering a painting. A magnificent feeling... and you still haven't seen the island, which is slowly approaching....
The visit to the Bisentina Island
When you disembark on the island, you become a bit of a child again: for centuries Bisentina belonged to noble families or the Church, so it never developed a real town. On the contrary, the vegetation is dense and lush, apparently there are 200 different plant species within it. In this forest surrounded by crystal-clear waters, architectural elements sprout up that were wanted by different owners: the church, chapels scattered around the island, the Art Nouveau boathouse and a terrible papal prison even mentioned by Dante in Canto IX of Paradise.
Guided VIsites on Bisentina Island
It would be nice to be able to follow one's instincts in search of these treasures, but one has to think about the protection of this very precious environment and the wonders it holds. For this, the only option is to participate in a guided tour. But after all, it is better this way, accompanied by an experienced person you will be sure not to miss a single corner of everything that is visitable.
A bit of history
The islands of Lake Bolsena are rich in history, secrets and legends. Martana Island, is linked to legends about Santa Cristina, whose remains were allegedly hidden here to protect them from the barbarians, and Amalasunta, queen of the Goths lured to the island by deception and slaughtered. Both islands have been private for centuries. The owners ofBisentina Island recently chose to restore and secure the woods and buildings within it to allow guided tours of the island. This is still a work in progress, so the hope is that as the years go by there will be more and more areas of the island to be included in the fascinating tour.
