A year of regattas in Porto Cervo
Dream sailboats compete against the enchanted backdrop of the Emerald Coast
Where is
What it is and where it is
The Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena archipelago are a true sailing paradise thanks to a combination of environmental factors and logistical facilities that are unparalleled throughout the Mediterranean. The fulcrum of sporting activity is the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), the beating heart of the Porto Cervo Marina: a large complex, open on the Piazza Azzurra, which transforms from a meeting and shopping place into the headquarters of the Regatta Village when the sailing season gets into full swing.
Why it's special
Sardinia is quintessentially the island of wind, especially when one thinks of its northern coastline and particularly the Bocche di Bonifacio, which separates it from Corsica. Shaped by the wind are the rocks of the Emerald Coast and the islands of the Maddalena Archipelago National Park. Buoyed by the wind are also a number of international sailing events, which hold sway in these waters in fine weather under the blue banner of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
Not to be missed
The calendar of sporting events organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda ranges from April to September and has its most spectacular moment right towards the end of the season with the Maxi Yacht regattas . This event offers the unforgettable spectacle of a fleet of large sailboats competing in the Gulf of Arzachena or in the Gulf of Cala di Volpe, against the backdrop of the islands of the Maddalena archipelago, with as much mundane as can be imagined for a side dish.
A bit of history
The Costa Smeralda was born as a tourist reality in the 1960s: fifty kilometers of northeastern Sardinia, facing the Maddalena archipelago, wind-sculpted granite rocks and a sea that justifies the reference to such a precious stone. The ambitious tourism project led to the birth of Porto Cervo, an exclusive resort and nautical events resort headed by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda since 1967.
Trivia
The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda became known to the world during the 1983 America's Cup thanks to the exploits of Azzurra, which surprised the world by battling on a par with its most titled opponents. That sailboat, which has risen almost to legendary status, has recently been restored and placed on a plaza in the sea, a monument of itself, against the backdrop of Porto Cervo Marina.
