Trekking Montalcino - Sant'Antimo
Fascinating hills to be rediscovered to the rhythm of one's own steps
Where is
What it is and where it is
One of the most spectacular features of the villages perched on the Apennines is the great wealth of roads and paths that depart from small towns and enter the lush and welcoming nature of the surroundings. So if you start from Montalcino, you find yourself walking through the typical landscape of the Tuscan hills among vineyards, cypress-lined avenues and olive groves. The arrival leaves you breathless: the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, a jewel suspended in time.
Why it is special
Just like ancient pilgrims we walk slowly enjoying every detail, every landscape, every tree, every vineyard. The serenity that conquers us as we go deeper into nature prepares us for the great spirituality of Sant'Antimo.
Not to be missed
For those who don't want to miss anything at all, the trek can be combined with the period of the traditional Montalcino festival linked to archery tournaments and historical re-enactments, and for foodies, there is also the possibility of a visit with tasting to a historic Brunello di Montalcino winery.
A bit of history
The Abbey of Sant'Antimo was, in the Middle Ages, a spiritual and economic power in the Sienese territory and controlled trade on the nearby Via Francigena. Built of alabaster and onyx, it looks like a jewel set in the green hills.
Trivia
Legend has it that it was Emperor Charlemagne on his return from Rome who founded the abbey as thanks for the help he received from local hermits who, thanks to the ancient knowledge of herbs, cured the emperor's army by mixing a meadow plant with local wine. The herb for this very reason was henceforth called Carolina Grass.
