Where is
What it is and where it is
Tipoteca is located in Cornuda in the province of Treviso at the foot of the foothills of the foothills of the Alps, a green and bountiful area famous throughout the world for its wine crops. The structure of the museum, a former canapificio, winds between two architectures, the museum-laboratory and the auditorium. A path takes us to the artisan and artistic heart of typographic and graphic techniques. One can thus come into contact with printing presses, movable typefaces and related archives, thus understanding the workings of the creative and production process of movable typefaces and printing. A series of multimedia installations supports the visitor in discovering these processes. Tipoteca has a searchable historical library and curates temporary exhibitions on the world of printing and graphic design. The auditorium has a monthly calendar of meetings and events: the program focuses particularly on visual communication topics, ranging from books to graphics and photography, from art to music.
Why it's special
A special scent welcomes the visitor to Tipoteca in its 3,000 sq. m., the scent of the printing world, with all its ingredients. In an impressive archive and laboratory, the culture and materials of the art of typography are actively preserved, protected and handed down thanks to the craft of the artisan-artist, the typographer, with his movable typefaces and machinery. Inside the facility we can visit the archives but also participate in the process of making a print, to better understand the mechanisms that have allowed the widespread dissemination of man's culture over the past 5 centuries. All this makes the Typotheque a special place.
Not to be missed
Open day is a Tipoteca tradition aimed at everyone, young and old curious to explore the fascinating world of typefaces and typography. For the occasion, Tipoteca staff will lead participants on a tour of the museum and to experience workshops on typesetting and printing with movable type, handwriting in collaboration with SMED (Writing by Hand in the Digital Age) and creative bookbinding.
A bit of history
In 1968, the Antiga brothers founded their printing company in Cornuda in the province of Treviso, the company over the decades would establish itself as one of the leading printing and paper converting companies in terms of cutting-edge technologies, organizational and professional skills of owners and collaborators. Tipoteca Italiana was founded by the will of this family of typographers in 1995. The multifunctional museum space in a short time became one of the world's top museums of typeface and printing machines. Silvio Antiga with commitment and expertise recovers wooden and lead typefaces, machines and equipment traveling from north to south of the peninsula, thus safeguarding the memory, history and functionality of a vanished art. In 2018, a celebratory volume of Tipoteca was released 50 years after the beginning of Antiga's typographic adventure.
