SHARRYLAND
Where is
What it is and where it is
The White Lands are so called because of their geological formation and are part of the paths of the Ancient Ways of Luvigliano. The route to reach them is quite simple: apart from a small climb lasting about 10 minutes, you follow the gentle slopes of the Euganean Hills, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. One of the most exciting moments is when you reach the plateau of the main path you have a panoramic view of the Euganean area.
Why it is special
This trail combines art and nature. Of course, it can be said of other trails in the Euganean Hills, but here we are talking about the beauty queen of the area: Villa dei Vescovi, the pearl of the village of Luvigliano, accompanied by the Church of San Martino and Villa Pollini. But there is also another aspect that often accompanies art and nature in these lands: the industriousness of its people. And since the walk begins with the Fornetto Pirio trail, take the opportunity to take a look, however fleeting, at the old quarry furnace.
Not to be missed
Continuing along the trail, the gaze lingers on the beautiful vegetation of the Euganean Hills, but here one must remember to look at the ground as well, otherwise one would miss a characteristic feature of the walk: the red-colored ground. This characteristic is due to the red flake, the limestone rock that happens to be encountered in this area. As you get closer to the top, however, the color changes to a yellowish, ivory hue; that's when you have reached the White Lands, used for the production of the lime from which the trail takes its name.
Trivia
Reaching the highest point of the Terre Bianche, gives a lovely view: the Euganean Hills district, Abano, Montegrotto, Torreglia, and sometimes even Padua. But when you are really lucky, or have chosen the right day, you will be amazed by catching sight of a small city surrounded by water in the distance: Venice.
