SHARRYLAND
Where is
What it is and where it is
It is said that it is from nothing that great things are often born. Here in the Chiampo Valley, from an esplanade of land was created in a few years not only a faithful reproduction of the Lourdes Grotto, but also a center of religious worship of great strength and faith. The miracle was the work of a sculptor from Treviso, Riccardo Granzotto, very soon to be known as Blessed Claudius, who after only a few days spent in the French town was able to reproduce, with the sole help of the images that remained imprinted in his mind, a grotto of concrete and iron, with a Madonna in white and snow-white Carrara marble.
Why it is special
Nature and spirituality come together in this religious complex where the foliage of large trees give us gentle shade in the summer, and a feeling of peace and well-being throughout the year. From the ancient Pieve up to the New Church and then to the Grotto, greenery is a constant in the landscape, even more so when we walk along the path of the Way of the Cross within a botanical park of about 18,000 square meters. Here the meditative silence, the landscape setting and the expressiveness of the bronze statuary groups distributed along 14 stations create an intense spiritual and reflective moment.
Not to be missed
Once at the shrine, it will be impossible not to be astonished at the marvel of colors used to create the mosaic that adorns an entire wall of the New Church. A guided tour of the site will give you the opportunity to discover the details of this great work by artist Father Marko Rupnik, who, through the thousands of small stones, has created a spectacular picture in which everything blends and unites.
A bit of history
During the construction of the cave, completed in 1935, difficulties arose that seemed insurmountable. In those difficult moments, Brother Claudius prophesied, "This cave will become a place of prayer and many people will come here." Many years have passed since the first Franciscan friars found hospitality at the ancient Pieve di Chiampo in 1867 and since a request came in the 1920s from a lady to build a grotto modeled after the one in Lourdes. Today many pilgrims arrive each year to visit the shrine, and waiting for them is a united community ready to welcome them.
Curiosity
Not everyone knows that the particular structure of the New Church has a strong connection with the area. It would be enough to have a view from above to realize that the roof of the church in fact represents a large and imposing shell. The idea of Franciscan architect Fr. Angelo Polesello and engineer Ferruccio Zecchin to use this symbol, familiar to localities in the valley, is linked to the geological history of the area and the numerous marine fossil finds from the Tertiary Era.
