A little history: Sigismondo Malatesta, patron of the arts.
Great lord was for Rimini Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta (1417-1468), captain of fortune and patron of the arts, poet and architect in his own time. It was he who called Leon Battista Alberti to Rimini to remodel an ancient Gothic church and make it his temple; it was he personally who designed the castle, a defensive apparatus and noble residence together, although he had the not-too-publicized contribution of Filippo Brunelleschi.
What is it and where is Castel Sismondo
It is a mighty building, with large square towers and mighty scarp walls, which stands out against the green lawn and is reflected in the veil of water that surrounds it as a reminder of the moat of yesteryear. The garden around it ideally links the castle, which houses a museum dedicated to Fellini's film sets, to the Galli Theater and the Fulgor Cinema, Fellini sites par excellence. Water, but the game does not always work, fades into steam evoking the atmosphere of "And the Ship Goes" or the arrival of the Rex in "Amarcord."
Not to be missed: the tour inside
The interior is divided into four interconnected parts: the Palace of Isolde, the central body of services; the large courtyard and the Maschio. Not to be missed is the Maschio, or the Great Tower, the most striking part of the entire complex, which has two floors connected by a spiral staircase.
Fun fact: Who was Isotta, lady of Rimini?
A wing of the castle was built for her. The daughter of a wealthy merchant, she was much loved by Sigismondo, who, already married to Polissena Sforza, met her when she was 13 or 14 years old. By her he had three children and married her only a few years after his wife's death. Educated, brilliant and most devoted to her husband, Isolde worthily held up the government during her lord's many absences, sold his jewelry to support him when he was in trouble. When Sigismondo died, she ruled on behalf of her son Sallust until he was killed by order of Roberto Malatesta, Sigismondo's illegitimate son. For those who wish to see it, Isotta's burial is located at the Malatesta Temple.
