SHARRYLAND
Where is
What it is and where it is
Lidi di Comacchio, a lively, hectic, bubbly place. But not only. Curious? I will reveal a place so quiet and silent that it seems isolated and remote, yet not so far away. A short walk from Lido delle Nazioni, proceeding north, a small sandy path takes you along a tongue of land that first overlooks the sea, and then plunges into the dense thicket amid the heady scent of maritime pine. Welcome to the Volano pine forest!
Why it is special
In an ecosystem of 170 hectares spread over 6 kilometers in length, sandy tamarisk, maritime pine and other native species such as holm oak and English oak soar mightily to remind us of the importance and show us the charm of the dune environments that we often sacrifice in the name of large tourist shores. For birdwatchers, various species of wild birdlife can also be observed in the pine forest, such as red herons, grey herons, egrets, mallards, moorhens and coots.
Not to be missed
Let's take the opportunity to look at this coastal environment with fresh eyes. Let's enjoy a boat excursion in the Po Delta: a journey through the waterways created by the reed beds to discover a rich and special ecosystem, where fresh and salt water, aquatic and dryland habitats come together, creating a very important environmental ecological complex. The departure point is at the Cannevié Oasis, and the tour, lasting about two hours, can be booked through the Po Delta Tourism website.
A bit of history
The Pineta di Volano area has undergone several reforestation works over the years, due to rising sea levels and the force of sea currents that reached even the most depressed area in 1966 causing the death of many pine trees. Therefore, with the subsequent reforestation, more resistant species such as maritime pine, holm oak and English oak were favored.
Curiosity
Few people know that there are dinosaurs in Volano. No, I am not talking about fossils, much less some strange reptile in the flesh. Walking along the path leading to the pine forest, you will come across one of artist Enrico Menegatti's "Born from the Sea" sculptures, "Dino." Created with logs and branches brought to the beach by sea currents, it is left unattended in front of the sea with the sole purpose, as the author points out, "to delight the eyes, the spirit and the mind."An open-air museum in a nature as fascinating as it is fragile, to be protected and preserved.
