SHARRYLAND
Where is
What it is and where it is
After a day spent in the Ligurian Alps Park, by now dusk we are attracted by the bright light of this monumental jewel in the heart of the Arroscia Valley. We skirt the old village along the course of the Arrogna, one of the many tributaries of the Arroscia, the main river that flows through the valley in the deep Ligurian hinterland bordering Piedmont. From here towers the central dome of the church of San Giovanni. We enter an alley of the village...
Why it is special
Along Via Umberto I we glimpse houses with an archaic flavor with architectural elements in exposed stone: arches, vaults, sometimes the entire exterior masonry. Alternating with these we are struck by the vibrant Ligurian colors, perhaps more typical along the Riviera, of some seventeenth-eighteenth century houses with a peeling appearance, eroded by weather and time. After facing the gigantic columns of the Collegiate Church of St. John the Baptist, we access a totally arcaded avenue, a typical structure of medieval villages devoted to commerce.
Not to be missed
Every second Sunday of the month, Pieve di Teco is populated with people who come from the furthest corners of the Arroscia Valley to attend the traditional "Arts and Flavors" market. An extraordinary combination of local crafts and typical products ready to cut and taste, in the striking architectural setting of the medieval arcades of the historic center. Thus, we get a glimpse of the essence of this village, which over the centuries has become the main center for the sale of products for sheep farming and agriculture in the entire inland valley of Imperia.
A bit of history
Pieve di Teco began primarily as a market town: from here essential products were sold and traded to modest buyers from all the villages of the Upper Arroscia Valley. Today's witness to this ancient mercantile tradition, according to some historical-archaeological evidence dating back long before medieval times, passes to the Mercatino d'Antiquariato, every last Sunday of the month.
Curiosities
Pieve di Teco guards the only monumental historic center in the Arroscia Valley. There one can still admire, especially to the north, near the Collegiate Church of St. John the Baptist, some portions of the surrounding wall built to protect the medieval settlement. However, what is really surprising is to discover an underground construction, as little known as it is extraordinarily rich in mysteries.
