Monte Cucco Regional Park
Air, earth and water guide us to the discovery of Mount Cucco
Where is
What it is and where it is
The extreme northeastern border of Umbria is occupied by the Monte Cucco massif, which, at 1566 meters, is one of the highest peaks of the Umbro-Marchigiano Apennines. Its slopes are rich in springs, streams, gorges and ravines, deep clefts in the rock where rushing torrents flow and perform spectacular waterfalls, but also splendid forests, including ancient beech forests. All this is now protected by the establishment of Monte Cucco Park, an area where nature is rich, exuberant and exciting.
Why it is special
That of Monte Cucco is covered by a dense network of trails for more than 120 kilometers, thanks to which you can explore the impervious and wild wonders that this area generously offers. But the land is not our only host: the water of the streams and the fresh air above the mountain also promise breathtaking adventures, including rafting, canyoning and paragliding.
Not to be missed
The very summit of Mount Cucco is used as a take-off area by numerous sportsmen and women who practice free flight, paragliding and hang gliding; the location is also known for hosting several world hang gliding championships and other events related to flying. Aside from its evocative charm, Monte Cucco is in fact the ideal setting for paragliding, thanks to its favorable meteorological and orographic conditions.
A bit of history
Over the centuries, movements of the earth's crust have created within the massif a myriad of ravines , cavities, and tunnels, later filled with rainwater filtered through the rocks. In some cases, these cavities have given rise to caves that can be visited with the accompaniment of guides and cavers. One of the most spectacular is the Cave of Monte Cucco, an amazing complex that, in addition to its natural wonders, also surprises with some details of its history: in fact, from some graffiti inside we know that it was explored as early as 1499 and 1551.
Curiosities
Although it is one of the least anthropized parks in the region, within it you will find some small villages, mostly devoted to handicrafts, agriculture, pasture and forest management. Slightly further downstream then, extend the urban agglomerations of Gubbio and Gualdo Tadino.
