What it is and where it is
The Necropolis of Puntone is an Etruscan necropolis in the heart of the Maremma countryside, not far from the village of Saturnia. The necropolis stands on the traces of the ancient Via Clodia. We are in the valley of the Albegna River, where necropolis and remains of ancient Etruscan and Roman roads and bridges appear among woods, olive groves, and ancient hot springs. The tombs, nestled in a garden of ancient oaks and sycamores, are formed of travertine slabs and arranged seemingly in no particular order.
Why it is special
The oaks and sy camores embrace the necropolis, making it a garden for roe deer, wild boar, and wild birds, which often go there to look for something to eat The sycamore, or "Judas tree," has found in this area, called Pian di Palma, a perfect place to grow, and in spring it enlivens the countryside with its beautiful pinks. Before arriving at the necropolis, one attrversa a path, also passable by car, that runs alongside a centuries-old olive grove. From here, you can continue on foot along the route of the ancient Via Clodia, a road from Roman times, and arrive at the Albegna riverbed.
Not to be missed
We cannot overlook the great contribution of the necropolis to the knowledge of the Etruscan people. Inside the Saturnia Archaeological Museum, which houses a collection of Etruscan and Roman objects found in the area, is a reconstruction of one of the necropolis tombs, recently included in the new exhibit. The museum is generally open on weekends and holidays.
A bit of history
The necropolis features "chamber" and "pit" tombs, dating from the 8th to the 4th centuries BC. The tombs, built by the Etruscans, were used until much of the 1800s by local farmers as shelters for animals or agricultural tools. The necropolis, which has been explored since ancient times, is one of many scattered throughout the Albegna River valley, and is the closest to the village of Saturnia. On the stones of the tombs wonderful oak trees have sprung up and grown, going on to form a particularly striking environment.
Curiosities
Not far from the necropolis rise "le Caldine," small pools of hot sulfur water that few people know about, which emerged from the underground stratum a few kilometers from the well-known Terme di Saturnia, creating here a very special microclimate.
