Jonathan Collection Flying Museum - Historic Airplanes
A place of firsts made of passion and memories
Where is
What it is and where it is
A hangar, an airstrip, and a collection of historic aircraft. The most famous models here are the Fokker Triplane, on which Manfred Von Richthofen, the Red Baron, flew, and Francesco Baracca's plane with the prancing horse emblem. We are in Nervesa della Battaglia, along the Percorso dei Croderi, which runs along the Piave River winding between the Montello hill line and the course of the river. Here echoes of the Great War still hover with military posts still present and marked with the I Bunker table. Welcome to the Jonathan Collection Flying Museum.
Why it's special
The museum has the extraordinary, although it is not for everyone to catch it at first glance. The visitor facility is located in a field hangar that appears to be done in the style of those in use during the war. But this is a mistake. It is actually of one of the three originals left in the world, the only one still operational. It is not the only record here. Also enriching the collection is a Caproni Ca.33Z, the first strategic bomber in history, and a replica of the Wright Flyer, the first craft capable of flying off the ground. Original or faithful replica, each plane here is a piece of history restored to the world and the sky.
Don't miss
All the planes you see are fully functional! The merit of research, passion and great skill of the Foundation's members and especially by Giancarlo Zanardo, President of the Foundation and a valiant pilot with over 2,500 hours of flight time to his credit. Not to be missed are the flight displays of the plane used by Major Francesco Baracca, the flying ace who died during a fight with his famous plane branded with the prancing horse, which is still revived today thanks to Italy's fastest stable: Ferrari!
A bit of history
The affairs of the Foundation "Jonathan Collection - Famous Historic Airplanes - Onlus" is closely linked to that of its president and flying. Its headquarters, was established in Nervesa della Battaglia in 1997. It would be nice to be able to go through the history of each model present, but it will be much more interesting to discover it directly in front of them. I will be content to tell you that in 2003, 100 years after the first powered flight, the Wright Flyer came back off the ground thanks to its replica and the guidance of Giancarlo Zanardo.
Trivia
The Jonathan Collection airfield was the set of Leonardo Tiberi's film "Noi eravamo" starring Roberto Citran: the Caproni bomber rebuilt by Zanardo and his volunteers is used for filming. On the walls of the Hangar hundreds of photos recall famous feats, such as participation in international air shows, including the recent 55th anniversary of the Frecce Tricolori, and flights with such illustrious personalities as astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti and Colonel Lance K. Landrum commander of the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano.
