Montauro - Mount Paladino (m 683)
Inland from the Orange Coast, it is an unparalleled vantage point over the Gulf of Squillace
Where is

Close to the sea, a panorama that repays the climb
Mount Paladino cannot properly be said to be a mountaineering destination, boasting only 660 meters in elevation, but its prime location on the slope that rises from the Ionian Sea to the ridge of the Calabrian Serre makes it a must-see hiking destination.
The Gulf of Squillace and the mountains that frame it
From the summit, the gaze travels along the coast from the mouth of the Soverato stream, with the seaside resort of the same name in the background, to the Gulf of Squillace in almost its entire arc. And then, depending on the position chosen, it sweeps over the mountainous hinterland, from Sila, across theisthmus of Catanzaro, to the Calabrian Preserre.
When the whole mountain was a vineyard as far as the eye could see.
Mount Paladino can be climbed as much from Montauro as from Gasperina, following the farm roads that cross countryside once cultivated mainly with vines. In the second half of the twentieth century , nature has regained large areas, and if this on the one hand is a source of regret on the other, it is an incentive to hiking. A reminder of times gone by remain fountains for watering livestock and boundary markers referable to the Charterhouse of Serra San Bruno, which had jurisdiction over these places.
Between history and legend the memory of a taurine deity
Mount Paladino has played a significant role for the centers that rise at its foot. This is especially true for Montauro, which even seems to owe it its name. In fact, historians are uncertain between Mons Aureus, because of phantom gold deposits, and Mons Taurus, referring to a pagan temple, of which, however, no trace has yet been found, dedicated to a taurine deity.
