Montalto Dora? Boy, what a country!
Small town in the Canavese area with a very special "feather in its cap"
Where is
What it is and where it is
We are in an area where nature gives us different colors for each season and the past has left its traces with churches, abbeys and castles from different eras. The village of Montalto, in particular, was founded by the Romans to defend Ivrea along the road connecting it to Aosta. There are many beauties to be admired here. Some are natural, such as the "cerulean D ora," that is, its river, the Dora Baltea; others are the result of human work, such as the beautiful castle on Mount Crovero, or the church of San Rocco, a small and ancient frescoed wonder.
Why it is special
Montalto is in a moraine amphitheater: the Insubric line, one of the major faults in the entire Alpine arc, passes right through here, and many geologists come to study these rocks. It is a very rich and very cold natural area, ideal for Savoy cabbage. This very vegetable made better by the cold is a local excellence, the "flagship" of the municipality of Montalto Doria.
Not to be missed
Every year, in late November, when the first frosts make the cabbage leaves more tender and tasty, the Savoy Cabbage Festival is organized. The event culminates in the "Night of the Lanterns," a re-enactment of the old crafts and activities of rural civilization. These are days dedicated to cabbage in its many forms, tastes and uses and its culture. Not surprisingly, the event is also jokingly known as "Cabbage Days."
A bit of history
All the history of this strip of Piedmont has passed through thisroad going up north: from the Heruli, to the Ostrogoths, from the Franks to the Canavesani Counts, from the Savoy to Napoleon Bonaparte, from here all the Spanish, French, and German invaders passed through, up to the Unification of Italy. And even today this land is crossed by a very important path: a section of the Via Francigena, the antechamber to the beautiful hiking and mountain biking excursions that start from Montalto, perhaps reaching the curious Terre Ballerine.
Curiosities
The Terre Ball erine are a magical place, where one can experience the thrill of dancing as if suspended above a large trampoline. The phenomenon occurs in the area near Rabbit Lake, resulting from the draining of part of this basin, on which organic materials have been deposited over time to form a large peat bog, which insists on a layer of water below. This creates this phenomenon of the dancing lands, which makes it possible to see and experience a curious spectacle, hidden among the vegetation and lakes in the area.
