So different and so united: Benigni, Troisi and a timeless film
From a rather banal subject, two of our most credited comedians derive a highly enjoyable film, directed four-handedly by themselves with exceptional results, to the point of making them seem almost complementary. Rarely have other (improvised) couples been seen to be so well matched.
Often such pairings (virtual, imaginable only by reading the names on the playbill) result in sleazy episodic films due to character - or comedy - incompatibility between the leads. Not here: although completely different in the way they express themselves, antithetical as an approach to life (expansive, jovial, overwhelming Benigni, shy and introverted Troisi), the two manage to animate hilarious sketches, perfectly edited to give more credibility to the whole. Sure, sometimes a few words may slip out, but gestures and expressions are enough to complete seemingly "ciphered" speeches.
Unforgettable situations make for iconic locations
The film reaches its climax when we find the two engaged in writing the letter addressed to Savonarola (thus reprising one of the most famous and celebrated scenes of Totò and Peppino), but already from the beginning we had been able to appreciate the great, unpredictable comic potential of the odd couple (the squabble with the "tollbooth attendant" or the priceless duet about the relative to be married suffice for this example). Justifiably crowned by a gigantic commercial success (it was box-office champion of the season), the film takes place in a not even too rough reconstruction of the town of Frittole in the year 1492 (almost one thousand five), not coincidentally the year of the discovery of America. Some not even too excessive pauses in the second half, however, very little compared to the extraordinary effectiveness of the first.
