What it is and where it is
Lake Calaita is a wonderful basin of blue water among the mountains: an alpine lake located in the upper valley of the Vanoi stream, 15 km from Fiera di Primiero, in the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Nature Park, at 1605 meters above sea level. The lake is situated on a very green peat plain, surrounded by larch trees. Such a lush setting cannot but contain a painting of the highest order, or a mirror that has the pleasure of reflecting images of irrefutable beauty. And indeed it does: refined ladies reflect themselves vainly in these waters: the Pale di San Martino.
Why it is special
It is the colors of the lake, the trees and the surrounding mountains, with their changing seasons, that are special. The larch trees go from deep green spring, to fiery red autumn, to snow-white winter. And then the pink of the Dolomites and all the shades of blue of the lake. More than unspoiled nature, it looks like the work of a supreme painter.
Not to be missed
Skirting the lake in a northerly direction, it is an easy walk to Forcella Calaita, a natural balcony from where there is a fantastic view of the Pale di San Martino and upper Primiero. From the lake, moreover, several easy walks lead to nearby villages, such as the pedestrian link to San Martino di Castrozza and Siror.
Trivia
Not far away is a second lake: Lake Pisorno. The more sensitive will immediately notice an abysmal difference between the two bodies of water: if Calaita invites peace and rest, Lake Pisorno makes one look on in awe. There is something about its dark waters that is awe-inspiring. Legend says it is inhabited by spirits who take revenge against anyone who disturbs the water by throwing stones into it. I'll leave you with one piece of advice: if you don't want to risk being caught in the storm, don't test the spirits, they are not very patient!
