SHARRYLAND
Where is
What it is and where it is
You park next to the church in Labante and wonder: where will these caves be? Here. See that little path? Cross the road, take it, and prepare to be amazed: a few more steps and a majestic spur of limestone rock (travertine, to be precise) stands before you like the trunk of an elephant, cloaked in moss and lichen that give it a wonderful color. From its summit descends a stream of crystal-clear water that gushes from the nearby spring of St. Christopher's, giving rise to a waterfall that often offers wonderful rainbows against the light. And here, under a kaleidoscope of spray, the Labante Caves open up.
Why it is special
The Labante Caves are also called the Living Caves. They consist of two caves formed over millennia. The smaller one is called the "Germans' Cave"; the other one, the "Labante Cave," on the other hand, is very large and because of its uniqueness and scientific importance was the subject of writings and treatises as early as the 1600s. It is in fact the largest travertine cave in Italy. To this day, because of its unique specificities in our continent, it is a destination for speleologists from all over Europe: an environment so special that today it is registered as a S.I.C or "Site of Community Interest."
Not to be missed
Various square festivals take turns during the summer in the park in front of the caves, but in the winter period nativity scenes are set up, many of them made precisely from travertine and displayed in the nearby Church of St. Mary. At all other times of the year, on the other hand, you can take advantage of the excursion to the caves to treat yourself to a visit to the surrounding area as well: several paths pass through here, leading you to discover old mills, the "Tane del Paroletto" and much more. Ready to get going? Adventure is waiting for you!
