"The Life of the Soldier in the Great War."
The museum that tells the story of everyday life at the front
Where is
What it is and where it is
When talking about the Great War, or visiting the trenches, it is impossible not to wonder what life must have been like for the soldiers. There were so many difficulties they had to face that it is really impossible to imagine a day at the front. The question, however, is very valid, and deserves an answer, and this is where the museum set up in 1999 in Recoaro Terme comes to our aid: "The Life of the Soldier in the Great War." Inside is an unusual collection of evidence of everyday objects used on the Alpine front during the First World War.
Why it is special
The items on display were recovered mainly in the Adamello and Pasubio areas by Antonio Storti of Reggio Emilia and offer an interesting perspective on the conditions of daily life in the trenches on the Italian and Austrian fronts. All this is strongly integrated with the context, namely the Great War: in fact, the Recoaro Terme museum is part of the "Ecomuseum of the Great War in the Vicenza Pre-Alps"circuit.
Not to be missed
The objects collected range from soldiers' clothing to food, from personal hygiene to trench work, from individual defense to moments of rest. Military equipment such as bayonets, bibs, boots and clothing are accompanied by tins, snuff boxes, bottles, small objects that, despite everything, tried to maintain a subtle link with everyday life that, even more than a century later, does not cease to make one feel a knot in the back of the throat.
A bit of history
Recoaro Terme was a border town between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the area of Campogrosso became a strategic defensive position and rear. The first trenches were born right there, short and armored elements according to the instructions of the Army General Staff, built by taking advantage of the abundant timber provided by the surrounding wooded areas.
Curiosities
To understand the exhibits and their role in the soldiers' lives even better, you can take a walk outside the museum: at Campogrosso, an easy hiking trail connects the remains of military artifacts from the Great War. The trail begins just beyond the refuge, on the northern slope of the Postal and Observatory peaks, and takes us to places that who knows, were probably trampled by those boots like the ones we just saw on display at the museum.
