The Prosecco Road of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene
Emotional journey through hills and vineyards that Unesco has declared a World Heritage Site
Where is
What it is and where it is
The Prosecco Road is a 90-kilometer route, not to mention digressions, linking the two small capitals of the wine district. The starting point is Conegliano: from the Castelvecchio with the eye you embrace the whole Marca Trevigiana; then in the Duomo you can admire a Madonna Enthroned by that Cima da Conegliano who was one of the most famous painters of the Renaissance. Point of arrival is Valdobbiadene, lying at the foot of the Cesen massif, among hills carpeted with vineyards; within its territory falls San Pietro di Barbozza, center of the area of excellence of Superiore Cartizze.
Why it is special
Along theway, a whole series of places to discover: Susegana, with the picturesque castle of San Salvatore, and San Pietro di Feletto, with its Romanesque parish church. Then from Refrontolo we detour to Molinetto della Croda, at the Lierza Falls, while in Pieve di Soligo we stop to honor the tradition of spit-roasting. Next stops: Solighetto, with the 18th-century Villa Brandolini d'Adda, and Farra di Soligo, at the center of an area of extraordinary wine vocation. Stretching finally to Follina, a village that grew up in the shadow of a scenic Cistercian abbey.
Not to be missed
The calendar of this wine route gives no respite. It begins with "The Spring of Prosecco," which covers many localities in the district, each with its own event, in a toasting season that runs from February to June. Then in the heart of summer comes the time of "Goblets of Stars": in wineries and squares to admire the spectacle of shooting stars on the night of San Lorenzo. Finally, "Cantine Aperte" (at the end of May, for the grape harvest, for St. Martin's Day) that brings direct contact with winemakers who are members of the Wine Tourism Movement.
A bit of history
"The cellar of St. Mark," as the city of Conegliano was known under the Republic of Venice. And here are the significant milestones in its more recent history: in 1877, the establishment of the School of Viticulture and Oenology, which consecrated it as one of the Italian centers with the most specific vocation for sparkling wines; in 1966, the inauguration of the Strada del Vino Bianco (White Wine Route), unique for many years; and finally, in 2018, the recognition of the Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Curiosities
In the lands of "Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Docg" not only Prosecco is produced! In fact, several other wines, whites and reds, fall under the "Colline di Conegliano Docg" label, among which two famous passito wines have specific appellations : the white Torchiato di Fregona, from Glera, Verdiso and Boschera grapes, and the red Refrontolo, from Marzemino grapes.
