On the Tyrrhenian slopes of Mt. Contessa
San Pietro a Maida (m 355) is a town on the Tyrrhenian slopes of Mount Contessa (m 881), one of the northernmost peaks of the Calabrian Serre ridge. A very happy land between sea and mountains, which in particular allows San Pietro to boast membership in the Association of Oil Cities. Few territories in Calabria and in Italy can count such a high percentage of olive grove area, about 800 hectares, with often centuries-old trees, compared to the agricultural area.
In the heart of the medieval village, the Matrice church
The village is documented in the 16th century as an agricultural hamlet of nearby Maida, but its origin is believed to be older, early medieval, as is suggested by theup-and-down maze of cobbled streets, the so-called 'wrinkles.' In the heart of the village, the Matrice church, dedicated to the patron saint St. Nicholas of Bari, raises its Gothic facade and twin bell towers to form a characteristic picture.
In the cloister of the Madonna del Carmelo
Beautiful initiative, a series of terracotta bas-reliefs by contemporary artists tell scenes of local life and tradition, from farm work to weaving, from community to devotion. A plaque commemorates the passage of Giuseppe Garibaldi. The most monumentally significant property is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which is reached in contrada Corda by a few hairpin bends through the woods: built on the site of an old convent, it has neo-Gothic features and a bell tower with an articulated spire. To the side of the church a large archway leads into a green space that on the side adhering to the building preserves a portico, a memory of an ancient cloister, that is truly evocative.
With your soul at peace you are ready for strong flavors
The shrine is the centerpiece of the Marian celebrations held during the month of July with all the typical repertoire of these circumstances: novenas, procession, illuminations, fireworks and the peculiarity of a community 'fagiolata' that exalts the most typical local product. In August, again in this regard, rendezvous in the square with the local specialty: the 'philatriaddj cu posa,' filatelli with beans, a long handmade pasta, ignited by the spiciness of 'nduja.
