Once upon a time, in the heart of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, there was an enigmatic stone sentinel that seemed to defy time and the laws of nature: the Pietra di Bismantova. This mountain, so unique as to appear almost magical, stands as an immense isolated rock, its flat top accommodating a vast grassy plateau of no less than 12 hectares. A vision that has fascinated travelers, poets, and dreamers for centuries.

A bit of history
This ancient formation, born more than 16 million years ago when the territory was still submerged by the Adriatic Sea, also holds archaeological secrets. On the northeastern side, at Campo Pianelli, a site has been discovered that tells stories of a very distant time: a Bronze Age necropolis. Here, the deceased were cremated and their ashes, along with precious ornaments, were placed in urns protected by stone slabs. An indelible reminder of a past that lives on in the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia.
Fun fact: the monumental maple tree.
And then there is the Monumental Maple, a majestic tree that watches over the entrance to the church at the foot of the mountain. At 500 years old, with a circumference of three meters and a height of twenty, this green giant is another wonder of an already extraordinary place.
