The Ionian Foothills - San Vito sullo Ionio
This is the fifth stage on the road through the hills between Squillace and Chiaravalle against the backdrop of the Serre
Where is

This municipality is located along the Ionian foothills.
At the time of the Great Norman Count.
San Vito sullo Ionio was founded in the 12th century by the Norman Ruggiero I along with other centers nowadays aligned on the provincial road between Chiaravalle Centrale and Squillace, two-thirds of the distance between the coast and the Serre Calabresi. The road coming up from Soverato is grafted to this line, and it is the convergence thus formed that marks the center of the town.
The thaumaturge saint who gives the town its name
The Matrice church, on Corso Umberto I, is dedicated to the patron saint St. Vitus Martyr. A statue at the top of the sumptuous Baroque altar depicts him with his characteristic attributes, the palm and dogs on a chain. The liturgical memory of the healer saint occurs on June 15, with all that follows in the village in terms of solemnities and street events; on the last Sunday in October, it is repeated with celebrations and a fair.
In the village, churches, residences, ancient manufactures...
Also noteworthy is the Church of the Annunziata, on Via Roma, documented as early as 1585 as the seat of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary and as such containing a remarkable sculpture of the Madonna. An interesting glimpse, walking along Via Dante, is the entrance, in its own monumental way, to a disused spinning mill, a witness to the time when mulberry cultivation and silk processing was one of the pillars of the local economy. Singular, the craftsmanship of pipes made from tree heather briar.
An unparalleled adventure, the coast-to-coast crossing.
From the village, one ascends to Maple Lake, a pleasant resting place for excursionists and hikers engaged along the Kalabria Coast to Coast trek.
