The church of San Francesco in Canzo
A small baroque church tucked away in the village of Canzo

What it is and where it is
Coming from Canzo's main square, one crosses intricate alleys and lanes, crosses the ancient small bridge over the Ravella stream, and finds oneself in the charming Piazza San Francesco. Here stands the church of the same name, founded in the last decades of 1330 as part of a convent complex.
Why it is special
Following the style of the saint to whom it is dedicated, the church of St. Francis is a simple, single-room building that preserves some fine examples of local art, such as the scagliola frontals of the side altars. The baroque style of the church is amplified and softened by the choice to use muted colors both outside and inside, creating an airy yet intimate and welcoming environment.
A bit of history
Originally dedicated to the Virgin, the church later became dedicated to St. Miro, although the exact date of this consecration is unknown. However, it is confirmed that this dedication certainly dates from before 1532, when a deed of gift explicitly mentions the Gésa da San Mirett, as the locals call it.
Curiosity
Around 1778, the presence of the Friars Minor Conventual in Canzo was no longer recorded, and the privilege of the Pardon of Assisi, the indulgence granted, passed to the Basilica of Santo Stefano. The convent, at that point, was turned first into a Civil Hospital and later, after the Great War, into a home for the elderly, until 1979. In the meantime, the church changed its dedication, taking the name of St. Francis.
