Calabria has a Honey City!
Beautiful place, outstanding honey, from citrus gardens to chestnut woods
Where is
A tradition rooted in myth
The Greeks considered it the food of the gods, and Calabria, which experienced its golden age in the Greek age, has precisely for this reason an extra reason for uniqueness. From the sea to the mountains, from Mediterranean scrub to coniferous forests, it is an amazing variety of productions.
Hill and mountain blooms in Amaroni
It is worth the case of the municipality of Amaroni, an area between 198 and 768 meters above sea level, which in terms of honey ranges from orange blossom , a product of the citrus belt, to chestnut, which comes from the hives of Mount Carbonara. Acacia, eucalyptus and sulla honey are produced between these two extremes. And finally millefiori, which is certainly not a reductive qualification, considering the wealth of wild flora.
A product intrinsic to rural civilization
At one time the production was functional to that of the sweets, so to speak, of precept on the various holidays. For the rest, popular culture recognized honey's medicinal and even cosmetic properties, but did not consider it a true cash crop.
The bee, a beneficial and valuable presence
Today, the picture has completely changed: "bees are cared for as members of the family," reads the mission statement of local beekeepers, and Amaroni with its six specialized farms is the only Calabrian municipality that is a member of the Association of Honey Cities.
