What it is and where it is
The Argimusco Plateau is one of the most striking natural and archaeological sites in Sicily, unique for the presence of megaliths. It is located at about 1,200 meters above sea level, not far from the Malabotta forest and the medieval villages of Montalbano Elicona, Tripi and Novara di Sicilia, in the province of Messina.
Why it is special
The Argimusco area constitutes a heritage of rare splendor. The barren, wild, windswept plateau is dotted with mysterious megaliths with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic forms, shaped over the centuries by the action of wind and water. The site, open to all horizons, is a place full of magic and mystery. It is easy to imagine among these huge stones ancient men intent on observing the sky and constellations or reiterating rituals related to the sun or fertility.
Not to be missed
The wind has carved into the quartz sandstone rocks figures of animals, human faces, symbols... The eagle with outstretched wings and beak seemingly facing a nearby necropolis, the hieratic Praying Goddess standing facing west, or again, fertility symbols and mysterious orbs.
Curiosities
The Argimusco area, with its privileged position, represented a perfect spot for sky observation: in fact, the landscape was chosen for the practice of astronomy and the study of the stars.
