"Jacurso, borgo del gelato," is written on road signs at the entrance to the center, and also confirming this is the resolution of the current council officially awarding the local ice cream the Denominazione Comunale. Calabria is a region famous for its ice cream, which draws on exclusive raw materials and a tradition rooted in history.

Ingredients that in other latitudes are not even dreamed of

First of all, citrus fruits: the Rocca Imperiale lemon, Sanguinella orange and clementines from the Piana di Sibari, Diamante citron, and Reggio bergamot. Then hazelnuts from Torre di Ruggiero, almonds, also in the form of nougat in that of Bagnara, but also pistachios from Bronte, trespassing on Sicily to which we also owe the ritual of brioche filled with ice cream to start the day. Again, licorice from Rossano, an expression of the Mediterranean maquis. And the curiosity of mulberry blackberries, a fruit that harks back to the ancient tradition of silk.

A singular case of ice cream on the road

As for Jacurso, the doyen of local ice cream masters recounts a three-generation family history that began in the early 1950s, studded with awards at important events and meetings with personalities from all over the world. The best-known signs of the local ice cream shop are posted right on the National Road that runs through the village. A sweet temptation for those passing through, even if most arrive there with their minds already made up.
