What it is and where it is
In the heart of Canzo, a picturesque mountain village in the Lake Como region, stands a neoclassical jewel: the Teatro Sociale. Its history is intertwined with that of Milan's wealthy families, who had made Canzo their second home. The construction of the theater in just twelve months between 1828 and 1829 had been an ambitious project undertaken by a group of vacationers, eager to make "dear and delightful the already protracted evenings of autumn." And it was with this spirit that Canzo's small, cozy theater was born: a pampering for the soul.
Not to be missed
The Social Theater is more alive than ever, with interesting offerings each theater season. This allows not only residents, but also visitors to identify with the wealthy vacationers of the 1800s, immerse themselves in the red velvets of the seats and the delicate decoration of the theater hall, to enjoy the shows on offer.
A bit of History
The first show staged in Canzo's Social Theater was "The False Gentleman," and it was a great success. But over time tastes changed, the theater lost its importance, and the building changed its vocation several times, even becoming a shelter for World War II evacuees. Fortunately, however, in the 1980s, the passion for culture got the better of them, restoration work began, and the theater once again shone with its beauty and hosted performances for adults and children.
Trivia
In the village of Canzo, the theatrical tradition has a long history. Even before the Sociale there must have existed, in fact, an ancient theater, located in a different place in the village. Even today there is still, in the historic center of Canzo, a street called "Teatro Vecchio."
