What it is and where it is
Maschio d'Ariano is the perfect destination for those who want to savor the pleasure of climbing almost to an altitude of 900 meters and enjoy a fantastic panorama. The ruins of the church and castle encompassed by nature, the remains of a nearby tuffaceous canyon recently damaged by a landslide, and Iron Age tombs offer a truly impressive sight that will catapult you on a fascinating journey back in time. Badgers, porcupines, foxes, pine martens and a host of other small creatures will be your companions in the splendid chestnut grove that will envelop you like a green cloak all the way to the top.
Why it's special
Getting this far allows you to combine the relaxation of a nature walk with the thrill of discovery and historical burden that only ruins can convey. If we add to this a panoramic peak that sweeps over the entire volcano and the panorama outside, it becomes undeniable that this is truly a place capable of surprising you with new emotions at every step.
Not to be missed
The summit is marked by an imposing iron cross. As the wisest say, however, one should not rush toward the goal without enjoying the journey. A good idea is to take a tiny bit of time to visit the ruins of the church and castle, or several Iron Age tombs, or even the striking tuffaceous canyon nearby, although partially collapsed.
A bit of history
Thanks to their strategic location, mild climate and rich resources, these mountains were inhabited and contested by man from the earliest times.Even the Romans settled there, as evidenced by the Aryan castle, built in 328 BC by an important family and contested for centuries by powerful nobles. Conflicts and contentions continued for a long time to come: during World War II, the German Command used these mountains, taking advantage of the opportunity to dominate with its gaze a vast area stretching from the Via Appia to the Via Anagnina.
Trivia
Just below the summit, among the ruins of the castle, lies a wall that at certain times, with the complicity of light and vegetation, looks like the profile of an absorbed young man with lush green hair in the wind and a thoughtful gaze.
