What it is and where it is
Lake Albano is an enchanting volcanic lake overlooked by several towns, including Albano and Castel Gandolfo. Both claim its name, but he, whatever you call him, stands placidly to be admired, set like a blue jewel in his green crater, within the Castelli Romani Regional Natural Park.
Why it is special
It retains the special charm of volcanic lakes, deep and mysterious, but it also offers wide beaches, free and equipped, that allow you to experience it in summer for refreshing baths and in all other seasons for beautiful nature walks. Indeed, the lake and part of its shores boast the presence of particularly interesting flora and fauna. The surrounding villages then offer exciting glimpses into local history and culture.
Not to be missed
The tour of the lake is a must! 10 km of flat walk with wonderful overlooks very close to the surface of the water. Added to this are other unmissable experiences such as the guided tour in the emissary and the educational boat on the lake, both organized by the Castelli Romani Nature Park. On Assumption Day in August, Castel Gandolfo celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Lake, with a procession of the statue of the Madonna on a boat, blessing of the lake and festivities complete with fanfare and fireworks!
A bit of history
The lake and its surroundings are rich in archaeological finds ranging from prehistoric times to Roman times. The pile-dwelling village of the Millstones, dated around the 20th century B.C., is a testament to this. The bottom of the lake is littered with the remains of the spectacular naval battles of the ancient Romans for recreational purposes. The narrow outlet, a tunnel more than a kilometer long, was also carved into the rock in Roman times, an interesting example of state-of-the-art hydraulic engineering for those times.
Curiosities
On the shores of the lake, the peregrine falcon, one of the most interesting species of birds of prey in our fauna, nests. The Castelli Romani Park documents the nesting of this beautiful falcon with cameras, streaming from the park's website. You can thus follow all the reproductive stages of the species, from egg-laying to the young's inoculation, with exciting live streams.
