SHARRYLAND
Where is
Todi is a wonderful Umbrian village that has so much to offer in terms of history, art and nature, we are well aware of that. But there is more, because in Todi even the palate can enjoy the bounty of the land.
A fragrant jewel
One of the area's most appreciated food and wine products is Grechetto, a white wine with a straw-yellow color, a very delicate bouquet and organoleptic characteristics that recall the gentle, fertile Umbrian hills on which its vine is grown. It is composed of white grapes of which at least 85 percent must be of the Grechetto di Todi variety, and the remaining 15 of other grapes, but always strictly from this area. Why so much precision? Simple, because Grechetto wine since 2010 falls under the Todi DOC designation, which includes the municipalities of Collazzone, Massa Martana, Monte Castello di Vibio and Todi. Such an esteemed and protected wine certainly cannot be improvised, and in fact Grechetto di Todi DOC is a grape variety with very ancient origins. Its origins are thought to be found in the Middle Ages, but according to some it even dates back to the Greek domination of the Italian peninsula, so much so that even Pliny the Elder mentions it in one of his most important works, calling it "Peculiaris est tudernis," that is, typical of Todi.
The Strada dei Vini del Cantico
Territory, history and traditions are inseparable elements of a good wine, which is why, to fully appreciate the taste, there is nothing better than taking a tour of the places where the grape variety of origin is grown. Given that vineyards, Umbrian hills and villages form an ensemble of irresistible charm, it is not surprising to think that it is here that one of the most appreciated wine and food routes in Europe was born: the Strada dei Vini del Cantico, a route that leads to the discovery of the territory of 13 villages involved in the production of Grechetto. The association of the same name was founded in 2002 with the aim of stimulating the economic development of the area and enhancing and promoting in a touristic sense the wine production, food and wine specialties and naturalistic, cultural, historical and environmental attractions.
Traveling the Strada dei Vini del Cantico allows one to calmly explore the present of this lush countryside, but also to catapult oneself into the past through festivals and historical re-enactments, explore ancient villages, learn about the history of the area, taste typical dishes and discover the peasant traditions that are the basis for the production of wines and other products of the land. A fascinating itinerary, preferably to be traveled at a slow pace, by bicycle, on horseback or on foot, following historic routes or minor roads.
