The village of Corciano
A corner id Middle Ages between Lake Trasimeno and the Tiber Valley
Where is
What it is and where it is
Thirteen kilometers from Perugia, on top of a hill that acts as a hinge between the Trasimeno area and the Tiber valley, stands what has been called one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Indeed, there is no denying its unique beauty as a medieval town asleep in time. Anyone lucky enough to get lost among the cobbled ancient alleys that wind their way through the limestone and travertine block facades, in a riot of flower-filled balconies and enchanting views, cannot help but enjoy the purity of a place that has remained intact and identical to itself over the centuries.
Why it's special
Walking through the steep and narrow alleys of a perfectly preserved medieval village will be a unique experience. Against the backdrop of a triple city wall (13th- 14th century), still perfectly preserved and walkable for more than a kilometer along the entire perimeter, your gaze will rest on enchanting views. Both outside the walls, with the spectacular scenery of Mount Malbe, and inside with the small dwellings and medieval buildings made of finely worked blocks of limestone and travertine.
Not to be missed
The enveloping silence of a village that seems to have been asleep for centuries and that has maintained over time the slowness of rural life and the purity of its forms, will be the ideal atmosphere to go and discover the most hidden corners or the most well-known buildings. A truly suggestive place is the Museum of Peasant Civilization, where you can discover all the secrets and curiosities of pre-industrial Corcian life: thanks to a collection of authentic tools and implements of daily life, both domestic and working, it is possible to relive those distant atmospheres.
Curiosities
The origin of the name, as well as the precise date of its founding are still debated among scholars. According to legend, the name Corciano would derive from Ciano Razzeano, son of Janus founder of Perugia. According to the Vatican Codex 4834, the town was founded by Coragino, a traveling companion of Ulysses. Popular tradition, however, has it that Corciano means nothing more than "heart of Janus." But the most likely and accredited hypothesis is that the place name derives from the Latin name Curtius or Corisius, Coricius, perhaps a landowner in the area.
