What to call a new coffee carbonated beverage? By association of thoughts, from Brazil, the quintessential coffee producer, to Brasilena, the comely peasant girl with the sombrero drawn on the label by a master of poster design, Renato Casaro.
What a great idea, a coffee gazzosa!
The history of this invigorating "coffee gazzosa" takes us back almost a hundred years, when Cesare Cristofaro da Girifalco contrived to produce sparkling beverages from the raw materials most at hand - oranges, lemons and then coffee - which he then sold in bulk. In the 1960s came the turning point, with the start-up of the Acque di Calabria plant, at the foot of Mount Covello, and the trademark filing of this and other drinks that were produced there.
A successful Calabrian even overseas
Initially known only in its region of origin, the Brasilena gradually gained ground throughout Italy-a niche product, to be sure-but what is even more surprising-thanks to Calabrian emigrants apparently-is its success overseas, one might say an irreverent challenge thrown down to His Majesty Coca Cola.
