SHARRYLAND
Where is
What it is and where it is
It is a Lucanian village, the second smallest in Basilicata in terms of land area. It has only 727 inhabitants, and together with Barile, Maschito, San Paolo Albanese and San Costantino Albanese, it constitutes the ethnic-linguistic Italo-Albanian minority in Basilicata. The town rises 564 meters in the south-central part of Vulture, in the Lucanian Apennines, north of the province of Potenza. Its location is the perfect one from which to see the most beautiful slope of Mount Vulture, that of the 7 peaks; when the air is clear it almost seems as if you can touch them just by stretching out your arm.
Why it is special
The people who populate the village are good and welcoming, even when they have nothing to offer. It has always been this way, perhaps because the ancestors were not born here, in Lucania, but were welcomed and hosted by the Lombards; here they built houses, cultivated land and proudly guarded their origins, Orthodox religion and customs. The village is set on a gentle slope adorned by the Broom, the bright yellow field plant that gives the small hamlet its name.
Not to be missed
A not-to-be-missed experience is a visit to the Shepherds', Wine, Grain or Herb Shops that takes us to taste typical local dishes. Simple, natural flavors characterized by rurality such as capocollo or soppressata, like ricotta ravioli or tagliatelle with breadcrumbs, capable of conveying a sense of belonging to the land and traditions. All traditional dishes that are seasoned with the oil produced in the lands surrounding the village and accompanied by Aglianico del Vulture wine obtained from the ancient vines.
A bit of history
The ancient Lombardo Massa, a Lombard town that was destroyed by the Normans, was repopulated in 1478 by a group of Albanian exiles under the command of the leader Francesco Zhura, who was given permission to build dwellings there. It was a land covered only with woods and broom. At the time many citizens had no property, land to cultivate or a roof to call home, although they worked from morning to night they did not get wealth, so they were used to making do with little, the important thing was to do it with dignity and a smile. Thus, Ginestra was born.
Curiosity
Among the small alleys of the village there is still an air of peace and roots; the double naming of streets, alleys and squares, the first name in Italian and the second translated into the Arabëreshe language, cannot escape the eye of passers-by. This hints at how deep-rooted the Albanian origins are.
