What it is and where it is
A wonder that surprises with its thousand faces. It sounds absurd, but despite being practically on the main road from Ventimiglia to France, the Annunziata Fort is almost unnoticeable because it is hidden by a lush pine forest. If, on the other hand, you walk along the Marina San Giuseppe, you can see this large stone structure atop the sun-drenched rock that slips dizzily into the crystal-clear sea.
Why it's special
The surprises do not end there. In fact, in addition to the extraordinary environmental context in which it is set, it is the symbolic and cultural value it has acquired over the years that makes it stand out. Within its walls, which can be accessed through a walkway suspended in the void that divides the street from the entrance gate, is what is now the "Girolamo Rossi Civic Archaeological Museum," divided into seven rooms containing numerous artifacts from the ancient Roman city of Albintimilum (Ventimiglia).
Not to be missed
Another extraordinary aspect of the museum is its ability to offer pleasant and spectacular moments of entertainment under the banner of culture and beauty. In particular, I am referring to the usual "Summer at the MAR," that is, when the fort also opens its doors in the evening hours. In fact, from July 1 to August 31, every Friday from 9 to 11 p.m. extraordinary openings of the exhibition halls, guided tours and educational workshops for children "Ludo et disco: Play with the ancient Romans" take place.
A bit of history
From the remains of the church of St. Lazarus dating back to the 14th century to a convent of the Franciscan Friars Minor Observants, erected in 1503, until it became a military fort at the behest of the Savoy government between 1831 and 1837. However, it was not until 1939 that the raised floor was built, which was used as the Civic Archaeological Museum in the recent 1989. From here, today, you can enjoy a breathtaking view right from the terrace overlooking the sea in the middle of the fort's two stone wings. An unmissable sight, waiting only for you. Shall we go?
Curiosity
Too bad we came here only one day late. On Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15, 2020, there was a special event "Love at the Museum," in celebration of Valentine's Day. In short, a special admission that aimed to celebrate love together with the culture and history of the place. A not-to-be-missed event for "lovers" of antiquities and beauty. Who knows, maybe they will propose it again....
