Eupilio, sweet door
Lapped by the waters of two lakes, a village beloved by artists and writers
Where is
Eupilio in the Lambro Valley
It is embraced by no less than two lakes, Segrino and Lake Pusiano; it is protected by the wooded Mount Comizzolo (1,140m); it is surrounded by the Molvesio and Imbrino hills... Eupilio, in the Lambro Valley Regional Park, is nestled in a landscape so gentle and beautiful that it has inspired many artists and poets.
Why it is special: haunt of artists
So many churches! San Giorgio in Corneno, San Vincenzo in Galliano, San Cristoforo in Mariaga, San Martino in Carella, and San Lorenzo in Penzano... Charles Borromeo used to come here to pray. Manzoni and Byron stayed there and many artists found inspiration here, drawn by the literary circles established by the local lords: the landscapes and atmospheres of Eupilio are in fact found in the writings of Parini, Fogazzaro, Nievo, Gadda, and in the paintings of Giovanni Segantini.
Not to be missed: the walks
A nice walk in Eupilio will take you to discover its "Gothic" treasures: the House of Witches, the Casino delle Fate and the Ghita Tower, prison - legend has it - of a beautiful and unfortunate maiden. But take the time to explore the surroundings, perhaps by taking a bike tour of Lake Segrino (along the Lake Cycle Route) or following the rural Via Crucis that leads from the village to Colle Molvesio. Or go even higher, to the cross that towers over Mount Comizzolo, a destination for hang gliding and paragliding enthusiasts. The views? Marvelous.
A bit of history: the beautiful gateway
It was 1927 when five tiny villages decided to come together: Carella, Mariaga, Penzano, Corneno and Galliano. And Eupilio was born, whose name recalls the Greek "bella porta" and Lake Pusiano, theEupilis lacus mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his Historia Naturalis. Curiosity: the wash-houses
Public wash houses were meeting places not only for women but for the whole community. The spring waters that fed them served not only for laundry but for all domestic needs. In Eupilio there is more than one: will you be able to unearth them?
