Hermitage of St. Albert of Butrio
A peaceful place to step into medieval spirituality

What it is and where it is
The Hermitage of Sant'Alberto di Butrio is located 687 meters above sea level in the municipality of Ponte Nizza. It is a hermitage of medieval origin, isolated in the woods, overlooking the Staffora valley in the Oltrepò pavese. A delightful jewel to be discovered on a nice day, at a leisurely pace, to explore all its surroundings and enjoy the view. In short, you can experience the visit to the hermitage as if it were a break from our daily life.
Not to be missed
It consists of four communicating churches from different periods, built from the 11th to the 14th century. The first, in particular, is not to be missed: it is dedicated to St. Anthony and is entirely covered with frescoes dated 1484. Another houses the mausoleum of St. Albert. One of the frescoes shows the saint turning water into wine at the table where three cardinals and Pope Alexander II are seated.
A bit of history
The original 11th-century Romanesque church was donated to the saint by the Marquis of Casasco for healing his son; a fortified monastery was built around it, of which the small cloister, well and tower remain.
Curiosity: guests between history and legend
The monastery over the centuries became so important that it hosted famous people. Among them perhaps Barbarossa, perhaps Dante Alighieri, almost certainly King Edward II of England, who deposed and imprisoned, had managed to escape from the country. Legend says he died and was buried right here but official history tells us instead that the king died in Berkeley Castle after being captured again.
