Panoramic crown on the ridge of the Marzola
Overcoming one's fears achieves beauty and serenity
Where is
What it is and where it is
I am taking pictures in Vigolo Vattaro, when along the road I pass a gentleman. "Good morning," he says to me cheerfully. "If you want to take good pictures you can go to the South Marzola Peak. It will be a three-hour walk, but from there you will see the whole Vigolana group and also Lake Caldonazzo. The panoramic crown of the Marzola is wonderful," he says. I accept the challenge and set off along the Terra Rossa trail, through the dense forests of the mountain that rises between the Adige Valley and Valsugana.
Why it's special
After tackling the last part of the steep trail, consisting of a track along the bare rock emerging from the uncultivated vegetation, I find myself firmly anchored to a puny wooden stake driven into the ground, on the edge of a steep ridge overlooking the Vigolo Vattaro woods. My heart is about to jump out of my chest, both from fatigue and from the dizziness I feel at this moment. One small misstep and I'm in danger of slipping. It feels fragile up here and at the same time...free. I have fixed in my mind - and in my lens - one of the most beautiful landscapes, on the crest of the Marzola.
Not to be missed
Walking along the entire ridge, one finds oneself admiring Lake Caldonazzo in its entirety. Its blue waters shimmer in the lake basin and, through the lens, are further enhanced by the groves of mountain pines that sprout along the path from which I continue to take countless photographs of the landscape, always being careful where I step. After a last short stretch in the woods I reach the south summit of Marzola: before me towers the grandeur of the Vigolana massif dominating the entire plateau.
A bit of history
The entire Marzola territory was heavily affected by the extraordinary weather event ofOctober 2018, with heavy consequences on all the forests surrounding the mountain, with the total temporary closure of many trails due to the fall of countless trees. The path to the South Peak of the Marzola was one of them. Now, after months of incessant work, one can return to enjoy the splendor of these inaccessible and scenic places.
Curiosity
Just below the south summit of the Marzola is hidden in the vegetation, right on the edge of a dense forest, a small bivouac. As you enter, you can rest in one of the sleeping places and perhaps break for a snack sitting outside on the tables with benches neatly arranged outside. If you come here in winter you can warm yourself...
