Colli al Metauro: between heavenly pears and ancient liquors
The precious gifts of the pear and olive trees of the Marche region.
Where is
When you want to refresh yourself from long walks, at Colli al Metauro you can calmly savor a characteristic assortment of produce from the earth, the result of carefully controlled cultivation.
The fruit of the angels
It is not easy to list all the excellent products the area offers, but certainly a special mention deserves the Pera Angelica of Serrungarina, recognized as a traditional product of the Marche region. It is a fruit that fully deserves its name. Indeed, it does not seem to belong to this world, the sweet and tasty juice flowing from the gentle white flesh, hidden under the skin that recalls the colors of the sky at sunset, with gold fading into the brightest red. It is a variety characteristic of this area, strongly linked to the land and traditions. This is why farmers cultivate it with extreme care, giving life to orchards intoxicating for their fragrances and relaxing for their succession following the undulating course of the Marche hills.
The pear in the kitchen
If the fruit itself is heavenly, one should not lose sight of the products that are obtained by processing it in the kitchen. Pears are one of those fruits that lend themselves to enrich every dish in the meal, from the first course to the digestive. The Pera Angelica from Serrungarina is particularly suitable for making ravioli, grappa and desserts, especially in the form of jam. A nice tart with the Pera Angelica is not easily forgotten! The culinary tradition associated with this fruit is celebrated in all its richness in September, during the Pera Angelica Festival. Where: in Serrungarina, of course.
A liqueur worthy of the saints of Paradise
But the pear tree is not the only generous tree that inhabits these lands. The olive tree also has much to offer. Of course, thoughts immediately run to oil, but there is also something else worth tasting: the Liquor d'Ulivi. This is a liqueur made from the infusion of olive leaves and bark in alcohol, with the addition of sugar and only natural flavorings, through a traditional process that takes several months and results in a liqueur with a sweet balsamic flavor that can be enjoyed au naturel, cold or heated. And just as the pear is angelic, this liqueur is heavenly, or at least Dante seemed to think so when he mentioned it in the Divine Comedy during the journey to Paradise, by the mouth of Saint Pier Damiani. Definitely, one must taste at least a sip of it before departing for home.
