SHARRYLAND
Where is
What it is and where it is
Its mighty walls seem to rise from the waters of the moat that surround it, and the still functioning drawbridge remains closed to form an impregnable fortress. One is almost surprised when, upon entering, one finds elegant and refined rooms , furnished in the typical stately taste brought by the families who have lived there since the 18th century. Indeed, like many other strongholds, Padernello Castle has witnessed the changing times and tastes, transforming itself to adapt.
Why it is special
We could say that this castle has evolved to keep up with the times. Over the centuries it has happened several times that buildings considered old and unfashionable were torn down. This one, on the other hand, has been able not only to endure but also to adapt to new things, welcoming them inside and making them its own. The result is a peculiar ensemble made from a defensive shell from the late 1300s that contains a refined, stately, soft and enveloping heart.
Not to be missed
Like any self-respecting castle, alas, it retains many rooms that are not accessible. Luckily for us, however, the foundation periodically organizes special tours that will take us to visit the castle shrouded in the darkness of night, or to venture into the mighty keep. All we have left to do is embark on the adventure!
A bit of history
The castle arose during the 14th century and gave impetus to the formation of the settlement that is now Borgo San Giacomo. The Martinengo counts decided to make it a noble residence, adapting the interior with all the comforts and beauties that their rank demanded. In 1861 it passed to the Salvadego Molin Ugoni family. It was abandoned in 1965 and left prey to neglect and decay. In the 1980s, recovery works began, but they were not enough: in 2002 part of the outer walls collapsed. It was this fact that triggered a restoration project that, thanks to a public-private operation, returned the spaces we can admire today.
Trivia
Biancamaria Martinego, had a mild character and a marked sensitivity. She could not stand life in the city in contact with the warlike activities of her father, a count and condottiere. The move to the country residence was a liberation. One evening, sitting on the battlements of the walls, she saw little lights and dived into the air convinced she could fly with them. It was July 20, 1480. She was 13 years old. Since then she has returned to the grand staircase every 10 years on the night of July 20, dressed in white and with a golden book in her hand. This contains a secret of hers that, after so long, still won't let her rest in peace.
