SHARRYLAND
Baronial Castle
Like the sentinels of the past we go up to the castle and scan the horizon
Where is
What it is and where it is
The Castle is situated at an altitude of 1,000 meters and with its bulk seems to protect the surrounding village and dominate the Cavaliere Plain below. Inside we encounter an ancient well, the small square and the imposing Mastio from which the view is lost until it embraces the Gran Sasso d'Italia, Majella and Terminillo.
Why it is special
A beautiful Sleeping One, perched on the mountaintop, which our admiring glances awaken at every step. It stands imposing and protective over the little houses of the ancient village, leaning against each other, as if defending an enchanted place. Ancient but intact, it amazes with its excellent conservative form.
Not to be missed
There is one event that is truly unmissable: in August you can enjoy a unique night. The notes of operatic artists spread, vibrating, inside the courtyard of the Castle, joining the beauty of the environment to create a magical atmosphere of yesteryear and a kaleidoscope of emotions.
A bit of history
The village became a fief in 1350 and a barony from 1440. The first lords were from the Collalto lineage, which gave the village its name. In the first half of the 16th century the village passed to the Savelli family and then to the Soderini. In 1641 the property went to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, whose noble coat of arms can still be seen above the entrance gate. Between the two staircases leading to the castle are epigraphs commemorating past renovations and improvements by Cardinal Francesco Barberini in 1712, Count Corvin-Prendowski in 1895 and the Giorgi Monfort family in 1932/34.
Curiosity
The charm of the castle meant that during the 1930s prominent figures from the political and artistic world of the time were hosted right here. Among them were Crown Prince Umberto di Savoia, Umberto Nobile, Ettore Petrolini and the Norwegian-born American painter-sculptor Hendrick C. Andersen.
