Castellano, panoramic terrace of Villagarina
A village suspended over the Adige Valley
Where is
What it is and where it is
The idea was, after being at Lake Cei, to visit the remote church of San Martino, a place of hermits. But then, on the navigator, I saw that this remote hamlet appeared and that there was a castle there. So I said to myself, "Well, if there is a castle a few kilometers from here, I can't miss it." So I added this stop to our itinerary and got it right. The medieval village, overlooked by the Bondone mountain range, looks like a terrace of more or less recent buildings clustered around a church and a castle, overlooking the Adige Valley below.
Why it is special
Arriving up here, an extraordinary view opens up to you: the immense Lodron square, bordered on the north by the church and on the south by the castle, looks like a veritable panoramic terrace over the Adige Valley. The fortification, with features typical of the 13th century, climbs the hill with its mighty walls, following a vertiginous slope that gives the entire structure a unique appearance. The square outside the walls has the shape of an amphitheater, and as you descend along the lower edge, you can look out and view the city of Rovereto from above, with the Adige River flowing through it, following its undulating path, like a giant snake hissing silently over the valley floor.
Not to be missed
If you love the scenery that only in such quaint villages can you find, you should come here for "El nos Nadal ": "our Christmas" in Trentino dialect. On December 8 and 9 and December 15 and 16, the magic of the past comes alive again in the beautiful village, when the 13th-century castle, hence the name Castellano, becomes an evocative setting for a trip down memory lane. The village streets are illuminated with projections and images and the square is transformed into a real amphitheater, ready to bring out, with shows and performances, lights and colors, the deep soul of the village.
A bit of history
Since 1456 the Lodron family, with the brothers Giorgio and Pietro, took possession of the four castles of Castelbarco: Castelnuovo di Noarna, Castellano, Castel Corno and the castle of Nomi. Today, the historical evidence of the passage from fief to fief of the Lodrons is witnessed in different parts of the village, first of all the central street (which bears their name) that crosses the entire village and on which rise both the church and the thirteenth-century castle that delimits the village.
Trivia
In the Piazza del Barc, a small square in front of the entrance to the castle, an old threshing machine is on display , machinery that was used to separate grains from ears of wheat or other grains. The work used to take place there. The machine dates back to the early 1900s.
