What it is and where it is
After pausing in the green park behind the shrine of Our Lady of Feles, we resume our route, entering the dense forest of the mountain. Just after passing a small wooden bridge over a rivulet of water we come to another structure, built on a plot of land that frames the dirt road: the Vigolo Castle.
Why it is special
The recently restored structure sits on a green scenic hill between the villages of Vigolo Vattaro and Bosentino. The most striking feature of this castle is that very little of its original medieval appearance remains today: the quadrangular turret and some curtain walls. The most striking elements, in fact, are the elegant mullioned and single-lancet windows, dating from no earlier than the 16th century.
Not to be missed
The castle today is private, therefore not accessible to visitors. At least not in the elevated part, i.e., the more modern part, transformed into an 18th-century residence after its reconstruction. However, the most beautiful experience is to enter what must once have been a very spacious room at the base of the little tower and observe the landscape of the Plateau, from Vigolo to Vattaro.
A bit of history
The origins of the original settlement are very ancient, probably even dating back to the Bronze Age. But it was in medieval times, with Frederick II of Swabia, that the castle took on political importance and was therefore entrusted to a noble family chosen by the Bishop's power. In 1477 it passed to the Tabarelli de Fatis family of Terlago. What can be admired of the castle today, however, is due to renovations dating from the 15th and 17th centuries.
