What is it and where is Caldana, a village in Maremma
Caldana is located in the municipality of Gavorrano, in the province of Grosseto, and lies on the last slopes of the Metalliferous Hills, 179 meters above sea level. Its name is rooted in the past and derives from the hot springs that, as far back as Pliny's time, gushed out at the base of the hill in the area called "Il Bagnaccio." Originally, the name "Caldana" referred to the cottage that stood near those springs.
A bit of history
This village has a very troubled history: passed from family to family it received its vigor and wealth after the wars thanks to the Austini family who characterized this small village in the Grosseto Maremma.
Why it is special: the renaissance village
Today, walking through its narrow streets, the visitor immediately perceives a different atmosphere than in other villages in the area: here the medieval imprint does not dominate, rather a clear Renaissance influence, recognizable in the wonderful facade of the Church of San Biagio.
Not to be missed: the wine cellars, the festivals and the view
Another gem of great value is the extraordinary network of wine cellars that extends below Caldana Vecchia and are opened during local festivals and celebrations. Walking through Caldana, among cozy alleys and enchanting views, one breathes in the sense of renewal that has marked its history. The panorama surrounding the village, with its natural beauty, adds a further touch of charm to this hidden corner of Maremma, where every stone tells of a past made up of transformations and new rebirths.
