Where is
What it is and where it is
American artist Sheppard Craig has modeled a forest on the edge of the village of San Giovanni d'Asso, which has been reduced to terrible condition, making it a hymn to life and philosophy. Walls, seats, small buildings become new and very old symbols together: oracles, temples, shrines. All erected to the magnificent and imaginative Goddess, or deity, who oversees the forest, life, or perhaps the universe itself. But is this really the case? More than giving certainty, the forest and the garden in the next valley pose questions. And, as far as I know, it is not even necessary to answer them to go outside. The deities are forgiving, and accept our - and their - ignorance.
Why it is special
The Bosco della Ragnaia is an exciting place, at once respectful of the nature that was there and revolutionary in its lines, insights, and proposals. It is a saving stop in the trance of life because it is oxygen for the lungs and a stimulus for the soul. And then there is another special feature, probably one of the most beautiful: it is a gift given to us day after day by its creator and owner, who freely welcomes us inside his mystical space.
Not to be missed
One of the most striking installations in the entire Forest is entitled "Things As They Are." A simple title, almost to the point of being disarming, for a small iron door that, in spite of the humility with which it presents itself, holds the essence of truth. You must open it, and lean out to see the answer. Do not be afraid: whatever it is, it will be the right one for you.
A bit of history
Sheppard arrives in Tuscany, in the Crete Senesi, and together with his wife he works as a gardener-demiurgeon-creator shaping the forest. This has long been called the Ragnaia because hunters used to pull nets through the branches to catch migratory birds. Year after year, since 1996, he has been creating something unique, acquiring new space and creating, next to the forest, a mystical hillside defined by flower beds and perspectives, almost an Italian garden next to the English-style forest. but it is contemporary art, not historical remaking, and it is absolutely vital.
Curiosity
When you go to the Woods in the morning, Sheppard himself often wanders around the paths picking leaves, pruning hedges, and is willing to have a word, especially if, as a good guest, you thank the host for the beautiful home he opens to you.
