What it is and where it is
The Basilica of San Bassiano is a majestic church that rises suddenly among the cultivated fields of Lodi Vecchio. The beautiful Lombard brick building stands out against the surrounding countryside with its bright color and harmonious forms. The facade is gabled, raised above the body of the building. Over the entrance, an aedicule contains a statue of St. Bassianus, the church's founding bishop. The sides are supported by strong buttresses. At the back are three apses, decorated with hanging arches.
Why it is special: a bridge between earth and sky
There is a very specific detail that strikes one when looking at the facade of the Basilica of San Bassiano: the two mullioned windows of the facade frame... the sky! The effect is given precisely by the fact that the facade is raised above the body of the church, that is, it is higher. This play of volumes creates a double effect: on the one hand it makes the basilica look more imposing, and on the other it connects heaven and earth. And acting as a messenger between the two is precisely the architecture of the basilica.
Not to be missed: the works of art inside San Bassiano
The interior is also majestic. It is divided into three aisles by large pillars with Romanesque capitals in carved stone and contains precious early 14th-century frescoes attributed to the Master of St. Bassianus. A curious fresco depicts four chariots drawn by pairs of oxen and testifies to the participation of the art of cattlemen in the work of the church; by the same master is the fresco in the apse depicting Christ Pantocrator between the Virgin, saints and Gospel symbols. Beautiful polychrome roundels decorate the intersections of the ribs on the vaults of the aisles.

Curiosity: hidden details in the capitals
