Auditore: a pearl in the hills of the Marche region
Mighty walls and sweet view of the Foglia valley
Where is
Where is Auditore
We arrive among these rolling hills of the Marche in the height of summer, but here... there is no one around! How peaceful! We enter the only store (where they sell everything from bread to screwdrivers) and chat with the manager, who tells us about his hamlet with tenderness and a hint of irony. We are in Auditore, a tiny walled village between Marche and Romagna, with spectacular views of the Foglia valley.
Why it is special
Truly imposing walls, for a village that is all in a hug! We pass through the one, unassuming gate...and here we are in the Middle Ages. The little upper square is dominated by an unusual 15th-century Civic Tower, round at the bottom, hexagonal at the top...like a lighthouse in the waves of the hills.
Not to be missed
The real work of art here is the landscape: undulating vistas, clear light, gentle breezes and all the colors of nature. Halfway between Urbino and San Marino, Auditore is a place of peace and silence and a paradise for cyclists and centaurs.
A bit of history
During World War II, in 1944, Auditore was the scene of bloody clashes when the Allies broke through the "Gothic Line" during the retreat of German troops. In the hamlet of Casinina there is a small Museum of the Gothic Line, which collects many artifacts and documents.
Trivia
In the Middle Ages, Auditore was ruled first by the Malatesta and then by the Montefeltro. It seems that both families used this village as the seat of the court: it was therefore an "Auditorium" where litigants could request a hearing to plead their case. Hence the name would derive.
